Christmas Lima Beans from Pata Bros. Farming and Ranching
Christmas Lima Beans from Pata Bros. Farming and Ranching, which has been continuously owned and operated by a single family for over a century. In 1912, Candido Pata, a Swiss immigrant, started with a twenty acres near Lompoc, California. Through the 1900's he and his two boys raised cattle and butterbeans. Now more than 100 years later, his two grandsons continue to work the family plot together and grow a variety of dry farmed beans.
We dry farm in California. Dry farming is exactly what it sounds like. We farm without using water, irrigation or anything other than the previous winter rainfall (it only rains December - March). We also use an almost-artistic soil tillage technique passed down from our turn of the century agrarian ancestors. Considering all the issues arising in the West over water rights, and water usage, this is quite possibly the only promising system for the future of agriculture in the West. Besides, it’s flipping magic!
People eager to eat more healthfully know that beans are rich in soluable fiber which helps eliminate cholesterol and are also full of protease inhibitors which fight cancerous cells.
Although the machinery may have evolved a bit, not much else has changed. The packaging is designed, produced and marketed by me, the farmer's wife, and the bags are filled by the kids. It is truly a family business.
