Sandia Heirloom Chile powder, sundried, hot.
The Sandia hybrid packs a surprising punch considering its New Mexico chili pepper roots. Its Scoville heat range of 5,000 to 7,000 Scoville heat units (SHU) puts it on par with the hottest possible jalapeño peppers. It can be surprising for many eaters who may look at this chili and immediately expect a heat level comparable to other New Mexico chilies like the Anaheim (500 – 2,500 SHU) or Hatch chilies (1,000 to 8,000 SHU). There aren’t many chilies of its size that pack a comparable heat.
Sun-dried chile requires a longer process than oven-dried, and one in which nearly everything is done by hand. This chile retains its natural orange color as it is not darkened in an oven. The taste is rich, earthy and sweet. The availability of sun-dried chile is more limited and this chile is more expensive. Once you taste the difference you’re hooked! Our growers are from Chimayo and other locations in northern and southern New Mexico.
Most often, chile powder sold in stores is a mixture of additional ingredients such as garlic powder, cumin or oregano. Rest assured that our Sun-Dried Heirloom Chile is 100 percent chile.
